A man was shot and a young child was injured Monday night on Appian Way in Lexington during what police think was "narcotics activity."
Derrick A. Fields, 25, told police he was in his car when a group of men approached and shot him, Sgt. Ann Welch said.
Fields was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with non life-threatening injuries and has since been charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, Welch said.
Fields is accused of bringing the small child along during narcotics activity, Welch said. The child was in a car seat and sustained minor injuries from shattering glass when the shots were fired.
The child has since been released to a relative and social services officials will investigate to determine if the child needs to be placed in another home, Welch said.
Police found Fields after a report of shots fired on Appian Way at 11:02 p.m., Welch said. An officer had stopped nearby to check out a car parked in the road when the call came in.
The officer then found the Fields, the child and another passenger in a car on the 3600 block of Appian Way, Welch said.
Fields has "not been forthcoming with information on why he was in the area," Welch said.
Charges have not been filed against the passenger, but detectives are still investigating.
Fields was still in the hospital Tuesday morning, but is expected to be released soon, Welch said.
