Beshear seeks default judgment against Crestlawn Cemetery

Attorney General Andy Beshear has asked for default judgment Tuesday against Dale Shackelford and Crestlawn Cemetery in Scott County.

The cemetery owner would have to provide full refunds, complete outstanding services and pay civil penalties if the judgment is granted.

So far, Beshear’s office has received 22 complaints from people who paid for funeral and burial services that were never carried out at the cemetery. Also, there are complaints that people paid for headstones that were never put into place. The attorney general filed the lawsuit in May.

Shackelford didn’t respond to the lawsuit, prompting the motion for default judgment. That motion is schedule to be heard at 1 p.m. Aug. 4 in Scott County Circuit Court.

Anyone with problems related to Crestlawn Cemetery who has not already contacted the Attorney General’s Office may call 502-696-5389 or ag.ky.gov to make a report.
