Eastern Kentucky University police announced a campus-wide safety alert at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday via Twitter, notifying followers of a “dangerous situation reported on or near Richmond Campus involving possibly armed individual with intent to do harm.”
A short while later, EKU police announced that four people who police said were involved “in a report of shots fired off campus” had been stopped in a car on campus on University Drive, in front of the Moore building, according to Twitter.
The four suspects were detained by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating, according to EKU. No injuries were reported; the suspects were taken into custody without incident, according to EKU spokeswoman Kristi Middleton in an e-mail.
Middleton said that shots were fired off campus but the warning was issued as a precaution when EKU police were notified that a vehicle with suspects was headed toward campus.
