Principal named for planned Fayette elementary school; redistricting planned

Meribeth Gaines, now principal at Northern Elementary School, will be the principal at the elementary school planned on Keithshire Way, Fayette County Public Schools announced Wednesday.

Construction on the school just off Reynolds Road near Lexington Christian Academy is expected to start in early May and be done by the start of the 2011-12 school year.

Some attendance boundary lines in the area will have to be redrawn; school officials said they're preparing proposed changes and will release them soon.

Gaines' appointment as principal of the yet-to-be-named school will take effect July 1, Superintendent Stu Silberman said.

Gaines' career spans 19 years, including posts as a classroom teacher, gifted education resource teacher, professional staff assistant and principal. She taught in the Franklin County Public Schools before joining the Fayette schools in 2001.

Gaines has been at Northern 10 years, the last two as principal. "Northern has been a wonderful home for me ...," she said. "I am excited about the wonderful opportunity and exciting challenge of opening a new school."

School officials said that appointing Gaines now will allow her to be involved in planning construction and staffing of the new school, and will give Northern time to select her successor.

Gaines, 42, has bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education, and is working on a doctorate in educational leadership at Eastern Kentucky University.
