Lexington back to school rallies rev up Saturday

Mayor Jim Newberry and Fayette schools Superintendent Stu Silberman will help celebrate the fifth annual Ready Set, Go! Lexington Neighborhood Back to School rallies on Saturday.

The rallies will be in 21 Lexington neighborhoods, providing backpacks and school supplies for the 2010-11 school year to about 8,000 elementary, middle and high school students.

Fayette County schools open for the new year Wednesday.

Newberry and Silberman will join other officials for the Ready Set Go! celebration at 11 a.m. Saturday at Duncan Park, 530 North Limestone, as a part of the Duncan Park neighborhood rally. Members of the Urban County Council and the Fayette County Board of Education will be on hand, along with other officials. The celebration is sponsored by LexLinc.

Families wishing to receive school supplies must register between 8 and 10 a.m. Saturday at each rally site. Supplies will be distributed at noon. For information, contact United Way 211 or LexCall 311.
