Three injured when Fayette school bus is sideswiped

Two adults and a child suffered apparently non-life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon when a car collided with a Fayette County Schools bus on Todds Road, Lexington police said.

Police Lt. Dean Marcum said the driver of a Toyota that was outbound on Todds Road apparently lost control and sideswiped the bus near the Kavenaugh Lane intersection about 4:40 p.m.

The driver of the car and a monitor on the bus were taken to the hospital. A child who was on the bus was taken to the hospital by parents, according to school officials. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Marcum said.

The car was heavily damaged, school officials said.

Police initially indicated that speed might have been a factor in the wreck. But Monday night, Marcum said speed apparently was not a factor, based on interviews with witnesses.

Fayette Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said the bus had just left Edythe J. Hayes Middle School with five special-needs students on board. An investigation is continuing.
