Garrard superintendent to step down

Garrard County Schools Superintendent Donald Aldridge will step down at the end of the school year.

Aldridge, 57, made the announcement at Tuesday night's Garrard County Board of Education meeting. He said that he's calling his decision a retirement, but he might be open to other possibilities if they came along.

"I'm entering another chapter of life," he said. "I read a book over Christmas break that said when one door closes, another one opens. Who knows?"

The school board probably will launch a search for a new superintendent in a few weeks, he said.

Aldridge has headed Garrard County Schools for four years, and he was superintendent of the Eminence Independent Schools before that. He has been in education almost 21 years.

"I've always loved kids, which I guess is why I've been in this business as long as I have," he said. "But I felt like it was time. We've been on a good run, ... and you kind of like to go out on top."
