The U.S. Department of Education has named Lexington's Glendover Elementary School a National Blue Ribbon School.
This year's list of 286 public and private elementary, middle and high schools also included four other Kentucky schools: Auburn Elementary in Logan County, Beechwood High School in Kenton County, Mann Elementary in Boone County and Star Elementary in Carter County.
Glendover was designated an "exemplary high performing school," indicating that it ranks in the top 15 percent in the state on the latest assessments of mathematics and reading or language arts.
The Blue Ribbon listing noted that 40 percent of Glendover's students are considered disadvantaged.
Principal Cathy Fine said the honor is also a testament to the school's English as a Second Language program, since more than 20 percent of Glendover students are classified as English language learners.
A recognition ceremony is set for Nov. 18-19 in Washington, D.C.
