An Eastern Kentucky University senior from Lexington died two days after he was injured in a Madison County car crash and a few days before he was set to graduate.
Cody B. Garcia, 23, died of a traumatic brain injury at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital at 9:42 p.m. Thursday, the Fayette County coroner's office said. He was scheduled to graduate Saturday with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, according to EKU.
Alyssa Moorman, 20, of Dayton, Ohio, died at the scene of the wreck, which occurred about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on Jacks Creek Road near Boone Way in Madison County. Moorman was a sophomore at EKU majoring in pre-nursing, according to the university.
According to police, Garcia and Moorman were passengers in a Dodge Neon driven by Abigail E. Melton of La Grange.
Police said Melton was driving east on Jacks Creek Road when she lost control. Her car collided with a westbound Chevy Cobalt driven by David Ballard of Richmond.
Melton, Garcia and an additional passenger from the Dodge Neon were taken to UK Hospital following the wreck.
Melton and the fourth passenger also attend EKU, school officials confirmed.
Ballard, who was alone in his car, was treated for non-life-threatening injures, according to state police.
Garcia was active in Lambda Chi Alpha, and fraternity members plan to accept his diploma for him when Eastern's College of Justice and Safety hands out degrees Saturday.
