Services will be Sunday for a Bourbon County Middle School student who was killed over the weekend in an accident on Interstate 64 in Scott County that seriously injured her parents.
Emily Sams, 13, was thrown from a truck after the driver of a Toyota Camry overcorrected in the westbound lane and slammed into the pickup about 7:15 a.m. Saturday. Emily's parents, Jeff and Shella Sams, were taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. He was in fair condition Thursday night; she remained in critical condition.
At an outdoor vigil on Sunday, friends and school staff members remembered Emily, an eighth-grader, as an excellent teammate — she was on the volleyball and basketball teams —and as someone who loved people.
In addition to her parents, Emily is survived by a sister, Shelby Sams of Lexington; grandparents Wayne and Bettie Ballard of Lexington, and Clyde and Sue Sams of Carlisle; great-grandmother Mable Riggs of Millersburg; an uncle, Mike Sams of Nicholasville; an aunt, Nikki Laszlo of Lexington; and several cousins and friends.
