Competing web ads give conflicting view of Mitch McConnell

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell might be fast learning the Arabic proverb dictating that the enemy of his enemy is his friend.

Internet ads released by McConnell’s two main opponents — Republican Matt Bevin in the Republican primary and Alison Lundergan Grimes as the likely Democratic challenger — paint a confusing vision of McConnell.

The Grimes ad, which features a burning house, takes the senator to task for voting with Republicans in a series of votes that resulted in the government shutdown, then inserting himself in a high-profile role in negotiations that ended the shutdown.

Bevin’s new web ad features a number of Democratic senators, including Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nev., Charles Schumer of New York, and Dick Dubrin of Ill., praising McConnell for his efforts to end the government impasse.
