About 600 people have registered for a summit aimed at generating ideas to develop Eastern Kentucky's economy, Gov. Steve Beshear's office announced Wednesday.
Registration remains open for the Dec. 9 event in Pikeville, called Shaping Our Appalachian Region, or SOAR. The website to register for the summit is https://kydlgweb.ky.gov.
Beshear and U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Somerset, announced the meeting last month in the wake of more than 6,000 job losses in the Eastern Kentucky coalfield.
Beshear said the response has been overwhelming, but not surprising given the great interest in coming up with programs to boost Eastern Kentucky. Eastern Kentucky is home to more counties classified as distressed than any other area of Appalachia, according to the Appalachian Regional Commission.
