FRANKFORT — Democrat George A. Brown Jr., a former member of the Lexington-Fayette County Urban County Council, launched his candidacy Wednesday for a state House seat in Lexington.
Brown, who was on the council from 1994 to 2006, will run for the 77th House District seat now held by Democrat Jesse Crenshaw. Crenshaw announced last month that he won't seek re-election.
Crenshaw has said he will support the candidacy of Democrat J. Michael Haskins to replace him in the House. Haskins, 57, a Fayette County magistrate, filed Dec. 16 to run in the race. Brown, 65, filed his candidacy papers Wednesday in Frankfort.
"Now, more than ever, does the Kentucky General Assembly need proven leadership to help guide our state forward," Brown said in a statement.
"My commitment to being a clear voice for north Lexington has not waned, and I stand ready to serve."
A native of Lexington, Brown has been co-chairman of the annual Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration and vice chairman of the annual Roots & Heritage Festival. He also is president of Friends of the Lyric Theatre in downtown Lexington.
Brown is the University of Kentucky's Facilities Management supplier diversity business enterprise coordinator.
The 77th House District stretches across precincts in northeast and northwest Lexington.
