In the race for the 12th District Senate seat in Fayette County, incumbent Republican Alice Forgy Kerr defeated Democratic challenger Kathy Warnecke Ryan.
With most of the vote counted, Kerr held a wide lead over Ryan.
Kerr, who chairs the Senate Economic Development, Tourism and Labor Committee, has represented the district in the southern part of the county since 1999.
By Oct. 3, the last date with available figures for both candidates, Kerr had outspent Ryan by a significant margin.
Kerr said in a telephone interview Tuesday night that her longtime service helped her in the race.
"I've been here and I think people know that I do my very best to serve them," Kerr said.
She said one issue she wants to focus on in her next term is payday lenders, which she said are "ravaging" people.
Ryan is an attorney whose husband, Michael Ryan, was killed in the crash of Comair Flight 5191 on Aug. 27, 2006.
