State Rep. Rick Nelson, D-Middlesboro, filed his paperwork this week to run for Kentucky state treasurer in 2015.
Nelson is a retired Bell County school teacher who has served in the Kentucky House since 2001. He is chairman of the House Labor and Industry Committee and a vice chairman of the House Education Committee.
"The state treasurer serves as a member of the board of directors for the Kentucky Teachers' Retirement System, overseeing the pensions and savings of our teachers, which I believe is one of the most important functions of this office," Nelson said in a prepared statement.
The incumbent treasurer, Democrat Todd Hollenbach, is finishing his second and final term allowed by law. The office is responsible for various financial tasks, including recording, monitoring and reconciling all transactions in the state's depository and checking accounts.
