Addison Mitchell McConnell was sworn in Tuesday to a sixth term in the U.S. Senate, ascending to the post of Senate majority leader shortly after the 114th Congress convened at noon.
McConnell, who was selected by his Republican peers to lead the Senate after last year's midterm elections, becomes the first Kentuckian to lead the Senate since former Vice President Alben Barkley in 1947.
McConnell walked down the aisle with Kentucky's junior U.S. senator, Rand Paul, at his side, and Paul stood behind McConnell as Vice President Joe Biden swore McConnell in to a sixth term.
