FRANKFORT — Larry VanMeter, a judge on the Kentucky Court of Appeals since 2003, filed Wednesday to run next year for the Kentucky Supreme Court.
VanMeter, of Lexington, is seeking the 5th District seat on the state's highest court, which is held by Mary Noble. Noble has said she will not seek re-election and will retire at the end of her term on Jan. 2, 2017.
The district includes Fayette, Franklin, Scott, Woodford, Bourbon, Clark, Madison, Jessamine, Boyle, Mercer and Anderson Counties.
VanMeter, a Winchester native, earned a bachelor's degree in history from Vanderbilt University in 1980 and a law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1983.
He is a former Fayette district judge and Fayette circuit judge.
If elected to the Supreme Court, VanMeter would become the third judge to have served at all levels of Kentucky's unified court system.
