Body found in Monticello cave

A body was found in a cave Tuesday morning in Monticello.

Wayne County Coroner Forrest Hicks said Monticello police called him just before 10 a.m. after the body was found. The cave is near the end of Trails End Road.

Hicks said the body appeared to be that of a male, but the person’s identity was not known, as was the cause of death. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday in Frankfort.

“It’s been there for a significant period of time,” Hicks said.

He said the remains were visible from the entrance to the cave, which is similar to a sinkhole. He said there is a steep drop at the entrance, and the body was about 30 feet in.

Hicks said the Wayne County Rescue Squad helped at the scene.
