Former Pike County court worker pleads guilty to abusing public trust

A former deputy circuit court clerk in Pike County pleaded guilty Friday to a felony charge of abuse of public trust, according to a news release from Attorney General Andy Beshear.

Bethany Smith, 36, pleaded guilty in Franklin Circuit Court.

Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate sentenced Smith to one year in prison, probated for three years, and placed her on pre-trial diversion, according to Beshear’s office.

Wingate also ordered Smith to pay $5,872.01 in restitution and apologize.

Smith was a bookkeeper. She started work in August 2004 and resigned July 29, according to the Administrative Office of the Courts.

Beshear’s office investigated after AOC did an audit and discovered that money was missing, according to the news release.
