Bomb technician, state police, FBI and ATF called to fatal shooting in Clay County

A Manchester man was fatally shot Tuesday at around 3:20 a.m. in Clay County during a confrontation, Kentucky State Trooper Lloyd Cochran said.

Preliminary investigation determined Matthew Caldwell, 40, of Helton, shot Jody Sevier, 34, Cochran said, when Sevier arrived at the home of his ex-girlfriend morning.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called when an explosive device was found in Sevier’s vehicle. The device was later determined to be a commercial firework, Cochran said.

Though the details are unclear, Cochran said Caldwell had dated Sevier’s ex-girlfriend, and the woman had recently called for an emergency protective order against Sevier. Cochran said he wasn’t sure if Caldwell and Sevier had been acquaintances.

Once the investigation is complete, state police will present the case to a Clay County grand jury to decide whether an arrest should be made, Cochran said.
