A Kentucky man disappeared Sunday afternoon while swimming off a beach in North Carolina and was found dead about seven hours later, according to the Holden Beach Police Department.
Emergency responders arrived at the east end of Holden Beach at 3:30 p.m. to assist four swimmers in distress, according to a news release. They all were caught in a rip current, Star News reported.
Three of the swimmers were rescued, but Richard Mullins, 24, of Jenkins wasn’t found until his body was discovered in the surf about 10:30 p.m., according to police.
Mullins’ cousin, Katie Ross, said he was a “wonderful man” and “the best cousin ever” in a message sent to a Herald-Leader reporter.
“He had the funniest personality and the funniest laugh,” Ross said. “I’ll never forget it. Anyone who knew him instantly couldn’t help but like him.”
