Nursing home resident allegedly steals, wrecks police vehicle

A three-vehicle wreck occurred Saturday on a U.S. 68 bridge near Canton after law enforcement chased a stolen Trigg County deputy's vehicle from a fire scene at a nursing home in Cadiz.

According to a nursing home employee, a resident by the name of Lawrence McCarthy stole the vehicle, but law enforcement officers would not confirm the suspect's identity. A man with that name is listed on the Christian County Jail website with charges of first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree fleeing and evading, theft by deception of a firearm and auto, resisting arrest, first-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and speeding.

The fire was mostly contained to one room at Better Senior Living on Shelby Street in Cadiz. No one was injured according to Cadiz Fire Chief Kerry Fowler.

The incident began when a Trigg County Sheriff's deputy responded to a fire at the nursing home and a person believed to be the suspect, allegedly took the deputy's vehicle that had been parked near the home. Cadiz police chased the vehicle, which led to a wreck on US-68 in the area of the Lake Barkley bridge according to emergency personnel.

Fire investigators have been called to the nursing home to investigate the cause of the fire, according to Fowler.
