A pilot was taken to the hospital after a small plane crashed in Montgomery County Saturday afternoon.

The single-engine plane crashed at about 1 p.m. on Tapp Lane in Mount Sterling, according to a dispatcher for the Montgomery County sheriff’s office. The pilot was the only person in the plane.

According to WKYT, the plane lost power midair and had to make a hard landing in a nearby field. Investigators are not certain exactly when the plane went down because they said the pilot did not communicate any trouble in the air to a nearby airport, WKYT reported.

The pilot was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital by helicopter, she said.

Another dispatcher for the Montgomery County sheriff’s office said the pilot had back pain and head trauma, but his exact condition is unknown at this time.
