Woman dies after she’s hit by car while watching eclipse

A woman died and two people were injured Monday after a car crashed into a small group watching the eclipse in downtown Hyden in Leslie County, police and WKYT reported.

The car crossed the center line on Main Street, and hit a utility pole and two women on a sidewalk in Hyden, said Kentucky State Police trooper Jody Sims.

The women were watching the eclipse, the station reported.

Mackenzie P. Hays, 23, of Hazard died at the scene, Sims said. Pedestrian Rhonda Belcher, 41, of Wooton, was flown to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington.

The driver, Alyssa Noble, 38, of Hyden was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center, police said. Noble’s and Belcher’s conditions were not immediately available.

Kentucky State Police were investigating the crash.
