The passenger escaped a burning vehicle. The driver did not.

A passenger was able to escape a burning vehicle in Carroll County, but state police said the driver was not.

Philip Coombs, 71, was driving north on Interstate 71 at 11:40 a.m. Sunday when he lost control and drove into the median. The vehicle hit a tree and caught fire.

State police said Coombs, of Louisville, “was unable to escape and succumbed to the flames.”

A passenger in the front seat escaped before the vehicle was engulfed.

State police said they do not know why Coombs lost control.
