Six college students who were hiking a trail in Pike County found a body Tuesday afternoon.
The students were on a trail off Peach Orchard Road when they found the body and called police about 3 p.m., said Pike County Deputy Coroner Zeb Hampton.
Hampton said the body was that of James Lee Carrol, 63, of Pikeville. He said Pikeville police are investigating the death.
“It does appear that it may have been an accidental fall, but they’re still investigating,” he said.
Hampton said Carrol had spent the night at his sister’s house and then gone back to his own home before his sister awoke Tuesday morning.
He said the trail where the students were hiking is near Carrol’s house and leads to a large rock and mountain lookout.
