Kentucky man dead after confronting police with shotgun, officials say

A man has died after a confrontation with police in Harlan County, according to Kentucky State Police.

Two state troopers went to a home on County Estates Road Thursday about 2:45 p.m. to investigate a complaint. When the troopers arrived, a man ran from them and into the house, according to state police.

The troopers followed the man into the house and found him holding a shotgun, according to state police. The man walked toward the troopers and refused to drop the weapon, police said, despite "several loud verbal commands" to put it down.

One of the troopers then fired his weapon, striking the man, according to state police.

The man, identified as Bradley J. Grant, 36, of Baxter, was taken to Harlan Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital and died there, according to state police.

Neither trooper was injured and both will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with protocol for all officer-involved shootings, according to state police.
