A Louisville man back fromCentral America has tested positive for the Zika virus, the state Department for Public Health confirmed Thursday.
The man was tested for the virus after showing Zika-related symptoms; the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the results, according to the state health department. The patient was traveling in a country where the virus is circulating.
Zika is spread primarily through mosquito bites or sex with infected people. The Kentucky public health department said the disease is not known to be circulating in mosquitoes in Kentucky or the United States.
Kentuckians planning international travel are encouraged to consult the CDC’s Travelers’ Health website, wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel, for country-specific health information.
