Man on ATV dies in shootout with state trooper in Western Kentucky

A man died in a shootout with a state trooper after trying to flee from the trooper on an ATV on Saturday afternoon, state police said.

The man, whose name had not been released, was riding the ATV on Dragline Road in White Plains with the trooper pursuing him when he lost control and the ATV flipped at 2:48 p.m., according to a news release from state police.

The man then took out a handgun and fired on the trooper, according to the release. The trooper, who was not injured, returned fire, hitting the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
