A 5-year-old girl died Wednesday in a house fire near Booneville, Owsley County Coroner Rob Morgan said.
The girl was identified as Jordyn Herald of Booneville, state police said. Her body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
The mother of the girl and another child were able to escape the fire, which was reported at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Morgan said.
The house was on Old Highway 11, more than two miles north of Booneville, he said. The cause of the fire at the small frame house is under investigation.

The initial caller reported that a young child was unable to escape and might still be inside the residence. After the fire was extinguished, a search was conducted and the remains of a young girl were found.
Firefighters from Owsley County, Booneville and Vincent departments were dispatched, Morgan said.
