One person died in a fire at a Knott County apartment building early Monday, according to Kentucky State Police.
An investigation showed that Gene Spencer Burden, 59, and his wife Carol Burden were awakened by a fire in their apartment, one of two units in a building at Pippa Passes, according to a news release.
Carol Burden was able to escape, but her husband could not get out, police said.
The building was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters and police arrived.

Firefighters found Burden’s body while putting out the blaze, police said.
Foul play is not suspected in the fire, and authorities decided not to have an autopsy done, according to the news release.
State police were notified of the fire at 5:50 a.m.
