Whitley County woman charged with murder in pedestrian’s death

A Williamsburg woman accused of killing a pedestrian with her vehicle in Whitley County has been charged with murder.

Sonia Askins, 46, of Williamsburg hit two pedestrians about 6 p.m. Monday on Ky. 895, Kentucky State Police said. Teresa Ward, 40, of Williamsburg died at the scene. Joshua Bennett, 37, also of Williamsburg, was treated at the Baptist Health Medical Center and released, police said.

Askins was southbound on Ky. 895 near Canadatown and crossed into the other lane, hitting Ward and Bennett, who were walking south, police said.

Askins also is charged with first-degree assault, reckless driving, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence and failure to maintain required insurance. She is being held in the Whitley County jail.

Whitley County Sheriff Colon Harrell said a state police accident-reconstruction team has been called.
