A state trooper shot and killed a Pike County man during a confrontation after he pulled a silver object from his pocket that turned out to be a beer can, state police said in a news release issued Monday.
John Casey, 32, died at the scene.
The shooting happened early Sunday. Police had responded to an assault complaint in the Phelps community.
Police found Casey and Lacy Wolford, 40, at a house, but both ran off after police determined that there were arrest warrants pending for them on other charges, according to the news release.
When police found Casey, Casey threatened the officer and hit him in the face with a rock, causing a minor injury.
Casey then pulled a silver object from his pocket. The trooper “fired his weapon in response to Casey’s actions,” killing him, police said in the news release.
Police discovered afterward that the object was a beer can, the news release said.
Police found Wolford later and arrested him on charges of public intoxication, fleeing police and possession of concealed deadly weapon.
