Rockcastle man arrested after messages on Internet ask that someone kill judge

A Rockcastle County man faces a felony charge after an Internet post appeared suggesting a state circuit judge should be assassinated.

Kentucky State Police arrested Steve Edward Tompkins, 36, Thursday afternoon after he allegedly posted on an Internet forum that he was interested in having Jeffrey T. Burdette — circuit judge for Rockcastle, Pulaski and Lincoln counties — killed.

On the Mount Vernon page of, a person with the handle “Big D Daddy” from London asked on Aug. 7 whether anyone wanted to “shoot a hole right through Jeff Burdettes head” and the next day posted several allegations of corruption and drug involvement against the judge.

Burdette said Thursday night that he was aware of the posting. He said he recognized Tompkins' name and that the Mount Vernon man made a threat against him 10 years ago when the judge was a prosecutor. He couldn't recall whether Tompkins had appeared before him since he became a judge in 2003.

He declined to comment further.

Tompkins is charged with retaliating against a participant in a legal process, a Class D felony. He is lodged in the Rockcastle County Jail under a $100,000 bond. A search warrant was served on his residence, and a computer was confiscated for evidence, according to a state police press release.
