A second bicyclist involved in the incident, Kevin Alshouse, 26, of McHenry, Ill., was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.
The crash occurred just before 11 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 25 south of London. It closed the highway for several hours.
According to state police, the incident occurred as Trooper Christopher Roberts, 31, was driving south on U.S. 25 to answer a non-emergency call.
Police said Roberts was traveling behind a white Plymouth passenger car driven by Ramondo Cabrera-Ceron,. According to preliminary reports, the Plymouth apparently stopped in the roadway and Roberts swerved to the right to avoid hitting it.
In doing so, Roberts' cruiser sideswiped the car and then struck the two bicyclists.
Cabrera-Ceron and a male juvenile passenger in his car were not injured.
Roberts is a five year state police veteran.
The case remains under investigation.
