A case against the American Veterans Coalition and its two operators was settled in Franklin Circuit Court, barring the charity from soliciting in Kentucky for 10 years, Attorney General Jack Conway announced Wednesday.
The Washington-based organization, run by Robert Friend Jr. and Shao Mei Wang, husband and wife, must pay Kentucky $10,000 and refund $9,927.50 that was raised to assist veterans. Less than 1 percent of the money was actually used to help veterans, the attorney general said.
The group raised $1.2 million nationally, Conway said, and gave only $7,400 to veterans. The charity disputes the allegations; the settlement is not an admission of guilt the attorney general's office said.
