Everyone within a mile-and-a-half radius of Corbin Ice Co. had to be evacuated for several hours Tuesday evening after an ammonia spill.
The ice company on Cumberland Falls Highway uses ammonia to supercool water, but something happened to cause a leak in a tank, said James Ridener, a dispatcher for the Corbin Police Department.
He estimated that 500 to 600 people were evacuated from homes and businesses around the company. The call about the spill came in at about 5:30 p.m., and the area was reopened at 9:09 p.m., Ridener said.
The city used its outdoor warning system to alert people to the evacuation, and several locations opened to accept people displaced by the incident.
"It was hectic," Ridener said of the evacuation. "We earned our keep today."
