Suspicious fire kills man, son in Breathitt Co.

An Eastern Kentucky mobile home fire that killed a father and his young son Tuesday night appears suspicious, a fire official said.

The fire on Ky. 52 in Breathitt County, near the Lee County line, started about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victims were Wayne McIntosh, 43, and his 3-year-old son, Denver McIntosh.

"When we arrived, the trailer was totally engulfed in flames," Canoe fire Chief Ben Nickell said.

He said crews immediately extinguished the fire, then found the bodies.

"It was pretty tragic," he said. "It was a very hot, intense fire."

Nickell said he was not allowed to say why the fire appeared suspicious. The state fire marshal's office is also investigating.

Firefighters have not determined where the fire started.

Breathitt County Coroner George Griffith said he was called to the fire about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The coroner said an autopsy of the victims was scheduled for Wednesday morning at the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort.

The bodies were found in the living room near a couch, Griffith said.

Nickell said the child's mother arrived home about 30 minutes after firefighters were called to the scene, and she was overcome with grief. She was taken to a local hospital.
