Sheriff's deputy accused of rape said sex was consensual

PIKEVILLE — A volunteer Pike County sheriff's deputy accused of rape last week told investigators that he had consensual sex with the accuser, Kentucky State Police Det. Ben Cramer testified in court Thursday.

Deputy Billy A. Hatfield happened upon the woman, who was parked having dinner with a male friend, about 9:30 p.m. April 30 off Ky. 119, Cramer testified.

Hatfield told the woman's friend to leave, Cramer said. The woman reported to police about three hours later that Hatfield had asked about her marriage and pending divorce, and then hugged her and raped her on the hood of Hatfield's car, the detective said.

Hatfield told police the woman propositioned him — saying that her husband couldn't know she was out with her male friend — and that the sex was consensual, Cramer said.

The rape was reported to Kentucky State Police shortly after midnight May 1, Cramer said.

Pike District Judge Kelsey Friend sent the case to a grand jury after the preliminary hearing Thursday.
