SALYERSVILLE — A misdemeanor charge accusing Salyersville city councilman Jeff Ross of threatening a city employee was dismissed Monday. Court records indicated the charge was dismissed on condition that Ross complies with the law in the future.
City worker Larry "Bubby" Carpenter Jr. said Ross threatened to "smash" him like a bug during an argument over whether city employees and vehicles were being used at Mayor Stanley Howard's personal property at Cave Run Lake, outside city limits. The mayor's brother, city water supervisor Thomas Howard, was later reprimanded by the water board for allowing his father, former Mayor Joe Howard, to drive the truck to the lake on Aug. 13.
Carpenter filed the charges Aug. 17, and a week later the two men were ordered to stay away from each other for 60 days until Monday's hearing.
Ross said Monday the hearing was "no big deal." Carpenter said he didn't want to comment and that dismissing the charges was between the prosecutor and the judge.
