A 13-year-old Leslie County boy accidentally shot and killed his mother with a 12-gauge shotgun early Sunday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.
The victim was Veronica Hubbard of Stinnett, who was declared dead at Mary Breckinridge Hospital in Hyden. Police did not identify her son.
Evidence suggests the shooting was an accident, police said, but detectives continued to investigate Sunday night.
Police said the shotgun had been issued to Sean Blair of the Letcher County police. He was off-duty at the time of the shooting. They offered no further explanation about Blair or his relation to the family.
