Breathitt superintendent provides bail

HAZARD — A Breathitt County school board member was charged last month with driving under the influence of alcohol, and the school superintendent signed the surety bond bailing him out of jail, according to court records.

George Daniel Strong, 51, of Whick, was pulled over by a Hazard police patrolman about 1 a.m. Dec. 24. He was seen "weaving from side to side in his lane and almost struck another vehicle," officer Adam Baker said in a citation.

Strong, who is vice chairman of the Breathitt County School Board, "admitted to drinking five to six beers a short time earlier" but refused to take breath tests, Baker wrote.

Strong was charged with reckless driving, possession of an open container of alcohol in a car, and driving under the influence, and he was scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 25, according to court records.

Arch Turner, who is the superintendent of Breathitt County schools, signed forms for a $500 surety bond with a bail bondsman in Booneville to get Strong out of jail, court records indicated.
