Man killed in Clay fire is identified

One person is dead after a fire early Sunday morning in the Oneida community of northern Clay County, Kentucky State Police said.

The victim's identity has not been released pending positive identification by the state medical examiner's office, state police said. But family members say the man who died was Charles William Smith, 23. Smith is survived by a 2-year-old son and a fiancée, said Smith's sister Teresa Jones.

"He was a really good father. He loved his little boy," Jones said.

Jones said the fire may have started when Smith left something cooking on the stove.

No foul play is suspected at this time in the fire's origin, police said.

State police received a report of the fire from the Clay County 911 Center shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
