Ex-firefighter gets two years

DANVILLE — A former Boyle County volunteer firefighter was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of complicity to third-degree arson.

Stephen Orberson, 19, of Gravel Switch is the third former firefighter to be sentenced in Boyle in connection with a series of fires at barns and abandoned buildings.

James Robert Tate, 25, of Harrodsburg was sentenced earlier this year to two years in prison after pleading guilty to five counts of third-degree arson. Frederick Tate, 22, of Perryville was sentenced to two years in prison on two counts of third-degree arson earlier this year.

Melinda Orberson, 23, of Perryville is scheduled to be sentenced May 25 in Danville. She pleaded guilty April 1 to five counts of third-degree arson.

No one was hurt in any of the eight fires in Boyle County or five fires in neighboring Marion County. The defendants were ordered to make restitution to property owners.

In announcing the suspension of firefighters in July, fire officials said they became suspicious when certain firefighters arrived on each scene before anyone else.
