Crews continue to search Tuesday for a Fort Knox soldier who was swimming at Taylorsville Lake in Spencer County.
Anthony M. Carter, 23, of Syracuse, Ind., had recently returned from Afghanistan and was stationed at Fort Knox in the wounded-warrior program for treatment of diabetes.
"He had become extremely diabetic, and they sent him home because of complications," said Sgt. Scott Herndon, spokesman for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Carter was boating with friends Saturday when he swam out into the lake to retrieve a can that was floating in the water, Herndon said. As he was swimming back, his friends lost sight of him. Carter had mentioned feeling like his blood-sugar level was dropping before he went swimming.
Herndon said crews had been dragging the lake since early Tuesday morning, but had not had any success retrieving a body. Previous diving and sonar attempts have been thwarted by timber in the lake..
