Man in critical condition after setting himself on fire in Corbin, police say

A Missouri man found burning behind a motel told Corbin police that he was attempting suicide.

Kenneth Patrick Turvey, 42, of Pevely, Mo., was engulfed in flames when an employee at Holiday Inn Express saw him and extinguished the fire with water from a nearby ditch, said Capt. Rob Jones, public affairs officer for Corbin police.

Turvey was found behind the motel at about 4 a.m. Friday. Witnesses said Turvey had been seen filling some gas cans before the fire, the Corbin News-Journal reported.

"He was having marriage problems and his RV had broken down" in Corbin, Jones said.

Turvey was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin and later was transferred to University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. He was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.

Jones said virtually his entire body had been burned.

The motel is off Exit 25 of Interstate 75.
