Man dies after night in Knox jail on DUI charges

Kentucky State Police are investigating the Saturday death of a 23-year-old man at the Knox County Detention Center at Barbourville.

Brian L. Mills of Barbourville was found unresponsive in his jail cell at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, according to officials at the state police post at Harlan.

Deputy Jailer Billy Mills, who said he is not related to Brian Mills, said there were no signs of trauma and there were no signs of a self-inflicted injury. Billy Mills said that he and other jail employees performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until an ambulance arrived.

Billy Mills said that Brian Mills was booked into the jail at 9:48 p.m. Friday on a charge of driving under the influence, first offense.

Mills was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Knox County Hospital by Knox County Deputy Coroner Mike Trent.

Trent could not immediately be reached for comment.

The state medical examiners office is performing an autopsy, police said.
