Casey woman accused of leaving 100 dogs in squalor

A Casey County woman was charged with animal cruelty after police found about 100 dogs, some in poor health, in her care.

Cheryl L. Turner of Liberty was charged Thursday with one count of second-degree animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, said Casey County Deputy Sheriff Freeman Luttrell.

Luttrell said more charges could be added after a veterinarian has examined the dogs. The animals of different breeds were tied, penned or running loose, Luttrell said. One dead dog was found in a field.

Plans were being made to move the dogs from the Chelf Ridge Road property where they were found, Luttrell said. That site is about eight miles north of Liberty.

Turner, who is cooperating with police, is scheduled to appear Aug. 24 in Casey District Court.
