State police are investigating the death of a former Whitley County official found with a gunshot wound early Friday, according to a news release.
Kyle David Kersey, 56, was pronounced dead at Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, state police said.
Kersey, a former county attorney for Whitley County, was found shortly before 7 a.m. when officers and emergency workers were investigating a wreck on Ky. 770 in southern Laurel County. Kersey had crashed his Ford pickup and crews found him in the truck, with a gunshot wound in the torso, according to a news release.
Police are investigating all possibilities on how Kersey was shot, said Trooper Don Trosper.

Kersey served eight years as Whitley County attorney in the 1990s, representing the fiscal court and prosecuting cases in district court.
He later returned to private practice but had faced complaints of mishandling clients' money in recent years. In one case, he allegedly took a woman's truck as collateral for his fee in a criminal case, then moved to drop her as a client and sold the truck without telling her, according to an order from the state Supreme Court.
He also was cited for receiving money on behalf of other clients, but not using it to pay them or their medical bills as required.
The state Supreme Court permanently disbarred Kersey on Thursday.
