Victim's car burned in attempted sexual assault

Police in Harlan County are searching for a man who allegedly held a woman at gunpoint and attempted to sexually assault her Friday evening, according to Kentucky State Police.

The incident began at the Coldiron community's BP gas station in Harlan County when the man approached the woman and asked for a ride. When she told him she wouldn't take him, he pulled out a handgun and demanded a ride, police said.

The two traveled to Martins Fork Lake and the man moved the gun to his lap and reached over to sexually assault her, according to a statement. The woman then ran from the vehicle and the man fled. She said she waited a while, then flagged down a passing car to get a ride to a phone to call for help.

When police responded, they found the victim's car engulfed in flames on a hillside, the report said.

Police are searching for the man, who appeared to be slim and in his late 20s with black curly hair and a goatee. He was last seen wearing a black AC/DC shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the suspect should call KSP Post 10 at (606) 573-3131 or (800) 222-5555.
